Indian Postal History Postal System has evolved over the years, used by various Indian Kings, the British set up, Role in Indian Independence, Post Independent India era, and progressing to the Technology Phase and further, IT Modernization Project 2012 with the induction of the online processes.
Warren Hastings (Governor General of British India from 1773-1784) opened the posts to the public in March 1774. Prior to this, the main purpose of the postal system had been to serve the commercial interests of the East India Company.
World Post Day is observed on October 9 every year in remembrance of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874 in Bern, Switzerland.
The purpose is to bring awareness to people about its contribution to global, social, and economic development.
