As India Celebrates Air Force Day, NewsMobile Relives Major Ops By IAF In The Past

The Indian Air Force (IAF) marks its raising day on October 8 as IAF Day. This year marks 89 years since the IAF’s foundation, and celebrations took place at the Hindon Air Force Station in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad in the presence of the Chief of Air Staff and senior officials of the three armed forces.

As we celebrate the glorious institution’s 89th anniversary, here are some glorious moments from its history:

Operation Meghdoot (1984)

In 1984, the IAF carried out the Meghdoot Operation to capture the Siachen glacier from the contested Kashmir region. IAF’s Mi-8, Chetak and Cheetah helicopters airlifted hundreds of Indian troops to the Siachen glacier.

Operation Poomalai (1987)

This operation was a simple airdrop of food and other relief material to Jaffna Town in Sri Lanka which had been blockaded by the Sri Lankan Armed forces fighting a civil war against the various Tamil groups in the northern part of the country.

India tried engaging Sri Lanka diplomatically to ease the restrictions which were creating a humanitarian crisis. Indian efforts were snubbed and India was left with no option but to go ahead with the airdrop.

Operation Safed Sagar (1999)

In 1999, the IAF was asked to support the Indian armed forces in the Kargil battle. The initial strikes had the Air Defence versions of the MiG-21s and MiG-29s providing fighter cover. Mi-17 gunships were also deployed in the Tololing sector. The IAF also used Mirage-2000s and Mig-25R during the operation.

Operation Raahat (2015)

Operation Raahat. During the 2015 onset of the Saudi intervention in the Yemeni Civil War, the Indian Armed Forces evacuated Indian citizens and foreign nationals from Yemen. The IN began seaborne evacuations on 1 April 2015 from Aden port. The IAF started air evacuations utilizing military and Air India planes on 3 April 2015 from Sana’a. More than 4,640 Indian citizens in Yemen were evacuated along with 960 foreign nationals of 41 countries. (IAF photo)

This was launched to evacuate Indian citizens and foreign nationals of 41 countries from Yemen during the 2015 Yemen Crisis.

Operation Maitri (2015)

A rescue and relief operation was carried out in Nepal in the aftermath of the 2015 Nepal earthquake.

Balakot Airstrikes (2019)

IAF used Mirage 2000 to strike in Balakot (PTI)

In an attempt to avenge our fallen soldiers during the Pulwama attack, the Indian government-led IAF attacked the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror camps in Pakistan’s Balakot on February 26. Twelve Mirages were employed for the secretive ‘Operation Bandar’.

Operation Devi Shakti (2021)

India also evacuated people on military transport aircraft of the IAF under the government’s ‘Operation Devi Shakti’.
