Fact Check: No, Nobel Laureate William Campbell Did NOT Say Ivermectin Cures COVID-19; Viral Claim Is FAKE

An image is being widely shared on social media through which it is being claimed that Nobel Laureate William Campbell has said that Ivermectin cures COVID-19.

The text embedded in the viral image reads, “My name is William Campbell, in 2015 I won the Noble prize in medicine for the discovery of Ivermectin. It cures many diseases including COVID-19. The fake news and big pharma want you to live in fear. Fauci won’t promote Ivermectin because he is the little parasite it destroys.”

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be FALSE.

Starting with our investigation, we did a keyword search but could not find any credible media reports substantiating the viral claim. Although, we did find an article by the Washington Post which stated that “False meme: Nobel Laureate William Campbell did not say Ivermectin cures COVID-19.”

Taking a cue from this, we found a statement that William Campbell released through Drew University in which it was clarified, “Drew University’s Nobel Prize-winning RISE Fellow Associate Dr William Campbell has issued a statement denouncing a fake quote attributed to him relating to COVID-19 and ivermectin.”

The statement further reads, “I utterly despise and deny the remarks attributed to me on social media on September 8, 2021. “I reject both the substance and the tone of the remarks and resent their presentation as a direct quotation. The tweet in question was not concerned with science. I am a biologist with no claim to expertise in the clinical evaluation of drugs against viral infections. Thus, I have not taken a stand in support of, or against, the efficacy of ivermectin against COVID-19.

Moreover, we searched and found an article by the US Food and Drug Administration titled, “Why You Should Not Use Ivermectin to Treat or Prevent COVID-19.”

The report mentioned that “the FDA has not authorized or approved ivermectin for use in preventing or treating COVID-19 in humans or animals. Ivermectin is approved for human use to treat infections caused by some parasitic worms and head lice and skin conditions like rosacea.”

The report further clarified that “currently available data do not show ivermectin is effective against COVID-19. Clinical trials assessing ivermectin tablets for the prevention or treatment of COVID-19 in people are ongoing. And taking large doses of ivermectin is dangerous.”

Thus, it becomes evident from the above information that a false statement about ivermectin can cure COVID-19 is being attributed to Nobel Laureate William Campbell. Therefore, the viral claim is false.
