Hindi Diwas is celebrated every year on September 14 in India. The day is observed with the aim to promote Hindi in India and worldwide. Another reason is to spread the language, values and cultural heritage of India among the Indians as well as people abroad.
Every every, it is celebrated to mark the decision of the Constituent Assembly to extend official language status to Hindi on September 14, 1949. However, Hindi Diwas was first observed in 1953.
The word ‘Hindi’ came from the Persian word ‘Hind’ that means ‘The Land of the Indian River’. In India, there are 22 scheduled languages, two of which are used at the level of the Union Government which are Hindi and English. Hindi is spoken by almost 250 million people. Hindi is the fourth most spoken language in the world. Apart from India, Hindi is also spoken in Mauritius, Fiji, and Nepal.
Hindi Diwas is celebrated across the nation through literary festivals, Hindi poetry sessions, essay writing competitions, speech contests, quizzes and other events.
