Fact Check: Old Image Of Farmers’ Protest Falsely Shared As That Of Recent Kisan Mahapanchayat In Muzaffarnagar

An image in which a huge crowd near an open ground can be seen has gone viral on social media claiming that it shows recent Kisan Mahapanchayat held in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar.

Farmers have been protesting against the three Farm Laws passed by the Centre in September 2020. The Samkyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) called for a Kisan Mahapanchayat in Muzaffarnagar on September 5, 2021. According to recent media reports, talks between farmers and government officials in Karnal proved inconclusive and farmer leaders said that they will now decide on the future course of action.

The image is being shared on Facebook with a caption in Hindi that translates to, “#Muzaffarnagar – #Kisan – #Mahapanchayat #Farmers – #Protest #Muzaffarnagar #We – # Support #Farmers.”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be MISLEADING.

A simple Reverse Image Search directed us to a news article that carried the same viral image with a headline that reads, “Defying prohibitory orders, thousands converge for ‘kisan mahapanchayat’ in UP’s Shamli.” The article was published on February 5, 2021. The caption of the image reads, “Farmers attend a ‘kisan panchayat’ at Shamli in Uttar Pradesh on February 5, 2021.”

Searching further, we found another article that carried the same viral image published on February 6, 2021. The article reads, “From Greta Thunberg to sugarcane dues to communal harmony, a mahapanchayat in Shamli on Friday, meant to rally western UP support for the farm protests, saw speakers explain a host of issues to an estimated 10,000-strong crowd.” Check another news report here

Thus, it is evident from the above information that an old image of Mahapanchayat held in February 2021 is being falsely shared as a recent Mahapanchayat held in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar. Therefore, the viral claim is misleading.
