Fact Check: Diamond-studded Shiva Lingam In Sivakasi’s Murugan Temple Shared As That Of Kanchipuram’s Ekambaranathar Temple

A video of a Shiva Lingam studded with diamonds is doing rounds on social media with a claim that it shows Kanchipuram’s Ekambaranathar Temple where the Shiva Lingam is studded with 1,00,008 diamonds.

“Kanchipuram Ekambaranathar Temple 100008 diamonds fixed on Sivalingam. Very lucky to see this you need thousands of eyes to see. Very rare to see pls share,” the Facebook post read.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the claim to be misleading.

We extracted keyframes from the video and put them through Reverse Image Search along with relevant keywords.
The search led us to the same video that was uploaded on Facebook dated August 2018. The post mentioned that the Shiva Lingam is present in Murugan Temple at Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu.

We also found a media report by a media organisation, News18 Telugu, published on June 27, 2020, about the diamond armour on the Shiva Lingam. The headline read, “VIDEO: Diamond armour for Shivalingam!”

The description of the video in Telugu can be translated to, “Shivalingam is usually made of stone but the Shivalinga in the Sivakasi Sri Murugan Temple in Tamil Nadu is encrusted with diamonds.“.

Further, we found the same video of the Shivalingam on the verified YouTube channel of Sri Sri Rashasthali Temple. The title of the video read, “Diamond Shiva Lingam/ হীরার শিব লিঙ্গ”.

The text in the video mentioned that the Shiva Lingam was decorated with diamond Kavacham in Murugan Temple at Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu.

It is clear that the video in circulation does NOT show a diamond-studded Shiva Lingam in Kanchipuram’s Ekambaranathar temple. Hence, the claim is misleading.
