A post is going viral on social media in which it is being claimed that ahead of the anticipated third wave of COVID-19, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced lockdown across the nation.
The post has a news clip with a caption that reads, “देश में बढ़ा तीसरी लहर का खतरा,फिर से लॉकडाउन,पीएम मोदी का बड़ा फैसला.” (English translation: “Danger of third-wave increased in the country, lockdown again, big decision of PM Modi / today lockdown news, school.”)
NewsMobile did a fact-check and found the claim to be fake.
We listened to the viral video carefully and found that the video speaks about complete lockdown in Kerala as fresh coronavirus cases are rising. However, it does not say anything about Prime Minister Narendra Modi announcing nationwide lockdown in the backdrop of talks of an anticipated third wave of COVID-19.
We found that the same report on lockdown in Kerala was uploaded by TV9 Bharatvarsh channel on July 24, 2021. At around 17: 23 time stamp, one can hear the voice-over saying that due to increase in COVID-19 cases lockdown has been imposed in Kerala and only essential services will remain open.
We also compared screengrabs of the videos and found them to be same. Hence, we can evidently say that the viral video has been taken from TV9 Bharatvarsh channel.
We also checked and scanned media reports on announcement regarding nationwide lockdown in the backdrop of impending third wave but couldn’t find any corroborating article. Reports however indicated that Kerala had imposed a weekend lockdown between July 31 and August 1, 2021.
Also, many state governments including Gujarat, Odisha, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana and Tamil Nadu have announced their decision to open schools since number of active cases is on a downslide.
Hence, we can conclude that the viral post stating that PM Modi has announced lockdown in the backdrop of the risk posed by the anticipated third wave is fake.
