FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the picture and found that the claim is false.

When we put the image through Reverse Image Search, we found the same picture on a verified Twitter handle of a National Geographic photographer posted on July 27, 2016. The caption suggested that the image is from Nepal.

But later, commenting on the same post, he clarified that the picture is from Bangladesh. Other comments on the post also mentioned that the picture is from Bangladesh.

Further, we found the same image on various Bangladeshi websites. A report published in Asia News on August 1, 2016, carried the image with the headline, “Bangladesh, 30 dead from floods in north-central. Thousands of people without food.”

The report mentioned that central and northeastern parts of Bangladesh, including Kurigram District and Jamalpur district, were hit by floods. The residents of the districts struggled for days with the flooding of rivers and heavy monsoon rains that destroyed their homes and crops.

More reports carrying this image on Bangladeshi websites can be seen here and here.

We also found that the picture has been posted by National Geographic on the Pinterest website. The post mentioned that the picture was taken by Shamsul Haque Suza.

As the post mentioned about the Bangladeshi freelance photographer, we looked for him on Facebook and found his account.

Our team contacted him on Facebook and he confirmed to NewsMobile that the picture has, indeed, been taken by him in Ulipur, Kurigram District, Bangladesh in July 2016.

Lastly, we found similar pictures of families cooking on tree rafts in Kurigram, Bangladesh in July 2016 on the photo stock website, Alamy.

Hence, the above information proves that the picture was taken in Bangladesh in 2016 and is not from India.
