Fact Check: Video Of Performance In Colombia Shared As That Of Coronavirus Victims In Indonesia

A video of some people trapped inside plastic bags is being shared on social media with a claim that it shows Covid-19 victims wrapped in plastic bags in Indonesia.

The caption of one such post can be translated to “In Indonesia, Covid-19 victims were wrapped in a plastic bag. Some people were not even dead. What a sad image! Wish Thailand never has to experience this. Protect yourselves and do not go out.”

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the claim to be false.

We extracted the keyframes of the video before putting them through Reverse Image Search and found the longer version of the same video on Facebook published on May 27, 2021. The title of the video in Spanish read, “performance empaquetados el poblado Medellín paro nacional 26 mayo 2021”.

(Translation: Performance packed in Medellin during a national strike on May 26, 2021)

The description of the video read ‘Performance “Empaquetados”, in Poblado Park, Medellin, May 26, 2021. A tribute to the people who have been found dead in recent days, drowned, in pieces and in bags. In honour of all those who left their homes to fight for their rights and could not return home.’

The post suggests that the video is taken in Colombia since Medellin is the second-largest city in Colombia.

With that information, we ran a Google search and found a report on a Spanish website, Prensa Mercosur, carrying the same video. “Video: Performance «Empaquetados», a tribute to those who marched in Colombia and never reached their homes”, the title of the report read (translated).

The report also mentioned that the performance took place in Poblado Park, Medellin.

On comparing the visuals of Poblado Park, Medellin with the video in question, we could spot the same buildings in both the pictures, which proves that the video was shot in Colombia.

More reports and videos on the tribute can be seen here and here.

This proves that the video being circulated as Covid victims in Indonesia is actually from Colombia.
