An image of Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu has gone viral on social media in which he is holding a photo of Indira Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India. The image is shared to claim Sidhu visited Sri Harmandir Sahib Gurudwara with a photo of Indira Gandhi.
The image is shared with the caption which reads in Hindi as, “पंजाब के लोग नवजोत सिंह सिद्धू की करतूत देखो जिस औरत ने आप लोगों का हम लोगों का हरमंदर साहब के ऊपर तोपों से टैंकों से हमला किया था और यह उसी इंदिरा गांधी की फोटो लेकर हरमिंदर सामने मत्था टेकने जा रहे हैं क्या नवजोत सिंह सिद्धू हो शर्म नहीं आती है ऐसी हरकत करते हुए.” (Which translates in English as, “People of Punjab, look at the act of Navjot Singh Sidhu, the woman who attacked us Harmandir Sahib with cannons and he is going to bow down in front of Harminder by taking the photo of the same Indira Gandhi. Are you ashamed Navjot Singh sidhu? Don’t you feel ashamed of doing such things”).
NewsMobile did a fact-check and found the claim to be fake.
On doing a Reverse Image Search, we found a similar image published by Getty Images on July 12, 2021, with the caption that reads, “Newly appointed Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Navjot Singh Siddhu being welcomed by party workers during his visit at Golden Gate, on July 18, 2021, in Amritsar, India. (Photo by Sameer Sehgal/Hindustan Times via Getty Images).”
In the original photo, he is seen holding the portrait of freedom fighter, Shaheed Bhagat Singh.
We also compared both the images and found the following similarities: Sidhu wearing the same colour kurta, and in the background, a person with a green turban is holding a flag of the Congress. In the original image, he is seen holding the portrait of Shaheed Bhagat Singh and not former Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi.
Free Press Journal also published a similar image on July 21, 2021. The article associated with the image reads, “Sidhu visits Bhagat Singh’s village, pays tribute.”
Hence, the original image is of Sidhu holding a photo of Shaheed Bhagat Singh and not Indira Gandhi.
