A video has gone viral on social media in which an elephant calf can be seen playing with water in a temple. It is being claimed that the baby elephant goes by the name “Vaikuntam” and was born in Guruvayur Temple, Kerala.
The post is shared on Facebook with a caption that reads, “Guruvayur temple newborn baby elephant Vaikuntam.”
NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be FALSE.
Doing a simple Reverse Image Search of keyframes from the video directed us to many news articles published in 2020 that carried a similar video. According to the article, “A two-month-old elephant calf was filmed splashing around happily in a tub of water at a temple in Karnataka. The baby elephant was named Shivani in a naming ceremony at Sri Manjunatha Swamy Temple, Dharmasthala in Dakshina Kannada (District in Karnataka).”
Searching further, we found a tweet by ANI dated August 31, 2020, in which it was stated that “Elephant calf Shivani plays with water after its naming ceremony at Sri Manjunatha Swamy Temple, Dharmasthala in Dakshina Kannada. Temple authorities say the elephant calf, born on 1st July 2020, is healthy & loves to play in the water. (Source: Temple authorities) #Karnataka”

We found another news article published in September 2020 in which the temple authorities said, “We have named her Shivaani- the name of Lord Shiva since she is under the care of presiding deity of this temple, Manjunatheshwara. Shivaani is taken care of by government veterinary doctors in the temple.”
We also found a post from the naming ceremony on the temple’s Facebook page. The photos were uploaded on August 31, 2020.
Thus, it is evident that the viral claim about this baby elephant being born in Kerala is False.
