A video is being shared on social media claiming that it shows the Indian Army retaliating against the death of Naib Subedar M Sreejith, who belonged to the 17 Madras regiment. He was martyred in the gun battle with terrorists near the Line of Control at Rajouri in the Sunderbani district of Jammu on July 8, 2021.
The video is being shared on Facebook with the caption in the Malayalam language that translates to, “17 Madras’ Broad Daylight’s reply to an unexpected betrayal in the dark. The Indian Army’s attack on the terrorist who took the lives of our beloved Sreejith Sir and his colleague. Many weapons seized from militants”.

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be fake.
By extracting keyframes from the video and doing a Reverse Image Search, we found the same video on a Facebook page, Kashmir Todays. The video was published on May 12, 2021. According to the description, the video shows visuals from the Kokernag gunfight in which three militants were killed.
Taking a cue from this, we found a news report on Gulf Today dated May 12, 2021, stating that a militant from Srinagar and two LeT (Lashkar-e-Toiba) terrorists were killed in a gunfight with government forces in south Kashmir’s Kokernag village. The video was taken during the same encounter. A clip from the video can also be seen in this news report.
We also found the video on the YouTube channel of the Daily Excelsior, a Jammu-based newspaper, published on May 12, 2021.
“Kokernag Encounter: Militants Made Abortive Bid To Escape Before Being Killed”, the title of the video read.
Thus, it is evident from the above information that the video shows an encounter in Kokernag, Kashmir on May 12 and not the Indian Army retaliating against the death of Naib Subedar M Sreejith.
