Kerala Reports First Zika Virus Case In Pregnant Woman

Kerala has reported its first case of Zika virus in a 24-year-old pregnant woman from Parassala in Thiruvananthapuram district. The woman is under treatment at a private hospital, said a statement from the health department.

Samples of 13 persons, suspected to be positive for Zika, have been sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune for confirmation.

The woman delivered her baby on July 7. She had been admitted to the hospital on June 28 with fever, headache and red marks on her body. The tests conducted at the hospital confirmed that she was positive following which her samples were sent to NIV, Pune. The condition of the woman was satisfactory.

What is Zika?

Zika is a viral infection, spread by mosquitoes. The vector is the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which also spreads dengue and chikungunya. Additionally, infected people can transmit Zika sexually. First identified in Uganda in 1947 in monkeys, Zika was detected in humans five years later.
