COVID-19 | Top 10 Developments This Tuesday Morning

India has reported 39,796 new virus cases and 723 deaths in the last 24 hours. While cases and fatalities have seen dip, the recovery rate has risen to 97.11%.

Top 10 Developments:

  1. The West Bengal government on Monday started the Covid-19 vaccination on boat programme in an island of Sundarbans and inoculated 150 people, most of whom are migrant labourers, South 24 Parganas District Magistrate P Ulganathan said.
  2. For the first time since the peak of the second Covid wave in April, Maharashtra registered 51 deaths on Monday, the lowest single-day toll since March 15 (48). In the city too, daily Covid deaths, which had emerged as a cause for concern last week with 118 deaths recorded in five days, registered a drop to10.
  3. More than 2.01 crore balance and unutilised COVID-19 vaccine doses are still available with states, Union Territories and private hospitals to be administered, the Union Health Ministry said on Monday.
  4. A recent study by ICMR reveals that breakthrough cases & COVID19 recovered individuals who’ve received one or both doses of vaccine have relatively higher protection against Delta variant in comparison to the participants who were administered either one or two doses of Covishield
  5. The report titled ‘Covid-19: The race to finishing line’, published by SBI Research, stated that vaccination is the only saviour as global data shows that, on an average, the third wave peak cases are around 1.7 times the peak cases at the time of second wave. A previous report by SBI had more or less correctly predicted that the second wave of infections in India may peak in the third week of May.
  6. Airports Authority of India (AAI) Employees Joint Forum Association and Unions will launch a nationwide protest on 6th July against AAI Management regarding the reduction in allowances of employees in view of COVID-19.
  7. Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday revealed plans to lift most of England’s legal coronavirus restrictions, including face masks and social distancing from July 19, urging personal responsibility rather than government edict.
  8. Germany’s public health institute said on Monday the United Kingdom, India, Portugal and Russia were no longer “areas of variant concern”, reducing travel restrictions for people arriving in Germany from those countries. All four countries had been downgraded to “high incidence areas”, the Robert Koch Institute said, meaning their citizens can now travel to Germany and quarantine on arrival for 10 days.
  9. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) said India, Nepal, Russia, Portugal and the UK would be reclassified from Wednesday, meaning any traveller will be able to enter as long as they observe quarantine and testing rules.
  10. Japan will ship 1.3 million more doses of AstraZeneca Plc’s Covid-19 vaccine to Taiwan, Japanese foreign minister Toshimitsu Motegi said on Tuesday, after previously delivering 1.24 million for free last month.
