Fact Check: Viral Video Of Crowd Breaking Down Wall Of Beverage Outlet In Kerala Post Lockdown Is Old

A video of a large mob trying to rush into a beverage outlet has gone viral on social media. The unruly mob can be seen climbing over walls and gates, shoving each other into the beverage outlet’s compound, causing the wall to collapse. The video is being shared with a claim that it shows people rushing towards a beverage outlet after the recent COVID-19 lockdown was lifted in Kerala.

The post is being shared on Facebook with a caption in Malayalam that translates to, “Since the Gate is small and the wall of the beverage in Perumbavoor was slightly demolished. Poor Corona is ashamed. I think beverage business is this much attractive, even at this Pandemic.”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be FALSE.

When we looked closely at the video, we noticed that no one is wearing a mask, following any social distancing norms or COVID-19 guidelines. In addition, there are no police officers in the video at any point.

On reverse searching parts of the video with keywords, we came across a Facebook post from July 31, 2017. The description of the video reads, “This was when the Perumbavoor Beverage opened at 6 pm after the hartal.”

(Original Text: ഹർത്താലിനു ശേഷം പെരുമ്പാവൂർ ബിവറേജ് 6 മണിക്ക് തുറന്നപ്പോൾ ഇങ്ങനെയായിരുന്നുവത്രേ)

We also found the same video uploaded on a YouTube channel on August 3, 2017. The video description read, “I did not think that after the hartal in Perumbavoor, the beverage would be opened like this .. !! Kerala Beverages Open.”

Kerala Beverages Open)

Digging further we found an article published on July 31, 2017, by Indian Express Malayalam online. The article clearly mentions that this video was taken after the BJP called for a one-day hartal to protest the killing of RSS worker Rajesh in Thiruvananthapuram.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that an old video is being shared as a large mob trying to rush into a beverage outlet in Kerala after recent COVID-19 lockdown restrictions were lifted up.
