Cosby, 83, had served more than two years of 3-to-10 years of sentence of his 2018 conviction. He was in a state prison in Shippack, Pennsylvania, and was released before 2:30 pm (1830 GMT) according to the corrections department spokesperson.
The actor was found guilty of drugging and molesting Andrea Constand, one of the employees at his alma mater, Temple University, at his home in 2004. The allegations made by Constand were fresh and criminal charges could have been filed.
Constand first made allegations in 2005 but former state prosecutor Bruce Castor did not press any criminal charges, after which she sued Cosby for sexual assault and defamation, which reached a settlement in 2006.
He was accused by dozens of women publicly for sexual assault in 2014 and 2015 and his conviction was seen as a watershed moment in the #MeToo movement brought an array of allegations and accusations against powerful men in Hollywood.
In 2015, Montgomery County district attorney Kevin Steele filed charges against Bill Cosby. She has issued a statement saying, “Jury found Cosby guilty and that Wednesday’s decision was not based on the facts of the case.”
Cosby is best known for his role of a lovable husband and father in his famous TV Show of the 1980s The Cosby Show which earned him the nickname of ‘America’s Dad’.
