A kilogram of Silver Needle white tea powder from a private factory in Coonoor from Nilgiris District was auctioned at an international tea auction and fetched a record price of Rs 16,400.
The silver needle white tea powered was produced by Avataa tea from the Billimalai Tea Estate.
On the occasion of International Tea Day, Coonoor Tea Trade Association conducted an online international auction of the factory-produced special tea powders from different tea factories as a part of the Tea Board’s celebration.

The reports suggest that the tea leaves must be plucked before sunrise with occupied snow and only 5 kg of leaf tip green tea can be procured from a cultivation tea of about 10 acres. After continuously processing them at a certain temperature, 1 kg of the Silver needle is obtained. This is the primary reason behind its specialty and high price.
A total of 4kg white tea has gone up in the auction and has been reserved by the exporters abroad.
The Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu specializes in tea production and produces a wide variety of special tea powders. More than 60, 000 farmers are involved in tea cultivation in the district and over 100 private tea factories run their businesses.
