Fact Check: Old Pictures Of Mizoram’s First Broad-Gauge Train Shared As Recent

Date:

A picture of a crowd around a train at a railway station is doing rounds on social media with a claim that the picture shows Mizoram’s first broad gauge train and people had gathered in large numbers to see the train.

(Translation: For the first time a train has arrived in Mizoram…people are surprised to see it. Old people are saying that this is the first time they’re seeing a train. Congress ruled this country for seventy years, the party has always ruled in the northeastern states. But they deliberately kept the country poor so that they can provide employment to people under MNREGA and increase their vote share.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post and found the claim to be misleading.

We ran a Google search using some keywords and found the same picture along with the same caption was posted on Facebook by several users in March 2016.

Further, on putting the image through Reverse Image Search, we found a report by The Indian Express dated March 21, 2016, featuring the same picture.

The headline of the report read, “Sanctioned in 2000, broad-gauge train reaches Mizoram after 16 years.”

As per the report, the first broad gauge train entered Mizoram at Bairabi railway station, 16 years after the gauge conversion project covering 84.25 km was sanctioned in 2000.

We found the picture in another report by News 18 dated March 23, 2016. The headline of the report read, “… and with this step Indian Railways creates history.”

The report stated that it was a historic step because the train put Mizoram on India’s railway map and made transportation of essential foodgrains easier, cheaper and safer.

The above information proves that the picture is from 2016 and hence the claim is misleading.
