Fact Check: No! Circuit Board With Words ‘COV-19’ Is Not Being Installed In 5G Towers

Date:

A video of a man claiming to be a telecom engineer is doing rounds on social media. In the video, he can be seen showing equipment labelled ‘COV-19’ which he claims are being installed in 5G towers.

the post caption read.

(Translation: This person is a labourer working on 5G towers. This 5G tower had some technical fault and had to be repaired. He was not allowed to open the plate but he went against the order and opened it putting his job at stake, and saw a Covid-19 chip in it. It is clear that there is some conspiracy against humanity)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the claim to be false.

Upon extracting the keyframes of the video and putting them through Reverse Image Search along with some keywords, we found the longer version of the same video on YouTube uploaded on June 5, 2020.

“How to Start a Conspiracy Theory – Heydon Prowse,” the video title read.

The description of the video read, ‘In a world that has become so mad that it is impossible to parody, Heydon Prowse and Don’t Panic turned their satirical hands to conspiracy theories instead. This is our attempt to vaccinate the world from the virus of fake news’.
In the video, the documentary maker and editor-in-chief of a creative agency Don’t Panic London, Heydon Prowse, explained that the video was a part of a social experiment that he shot in June 2020. The video shows how easy it is to start a conspiracy theory and make people believe in fake news on social media.
He explained that he along with his team put the ‘Cov 19’ sticker on a circuit board and staged the video. The video which was later uploaded on Twitter got viral and started circulating with fake claims.
On examining the longer version of the video, we found that the circuit used in the video was a of a Virgin Media box for cable television. We found the picture of the circuit but there was no ‘Cov 19’ engraving on it.

Incidentally, while researching on the relation between 5G towers and coronavirus, we found a tweet by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Government of India’s nodal information agency, which stated that there is NO relation between 5G and the spread of coronavirus.

Earlier, NewsMobile had debunked various other posts related to 5G testing in India, including the one claiming that 5G technology used on cellular phones for the Internet is responsible for spreading coronavirus. The links to the articles can be found here, here and here.

In conclusion, upon analysing our findings, it can be said that the video and the claim are fake.
