A new kaftan collection of Italian luxury fashion house Gucci became the subject of Twitter chatter.
The brand’s latest collection has traditional necklines and tassels which reminded everyone of an Indian kurta that is worn by most of the women in the country.
Twitterati’s mocked the collection for its price since the brand is selling at an unbelievable price of 3,500$!
A Twitter user flagged the news in a post, which went viral and got several responses, especially from desi users. The user posted the screenshot of the kurta and wrote “Gucci is selling a kurta for 2.5 lakhs? I will get it for 500 bucks.”

Users called it just an expensive version of an Indian traditional Kurta. Gucci describes it as floral embroidery kaftan kurta on their website.
This is how users reacted to the viral post:
According to their reactions, people on Twitter don’t seem happy either with price or the cultural appropriation, which some say is high even for a world-famous luxury fashion house as similar outfits can be bought for a fraction of the price.
First of all this is a kurta not kaftan, secondly, I can buy 2 like this under 500 bucks. I know “it’s a brand thing” but this is extremely absurd

Some claimed that they could find a similar piece of cloth from local retailers and markets. And some users mocked them by saying that they can buy it from Sarojini for less than a 5$.
Gucci seems to be scamming white people for the kurta that can be bought at a very less and reasonable price in India with Indian clothing, wrote one user.

This is not the first when the brand has come under such a backlash and fire for cultural appropriation, earlier, in 2018, the brand was highly criticized as they sent the models down the runway in underwear wearing hijab and turban. The brand was slammed for using turban as a fashion accessory as it is a very big part of Sikh religion and was called completely unacceptable and offensive.
