Fact Check: Visuals Of Cyclone Tauktae Shared As Cyclone Yaas Impact In West Bengal

A post is being shared on social media claiming to be from Digha, a coastal town in East Midnapore district of West Bengal. In the post, a video showing waves engulfing houses along the shore can be seen and it is being claimed that the video shows the present situation in Digha due to Cyclone Yaas.

The post is being shared on Facebook with a caption that reads, “PRESENT POSITION OF DIGHA.”

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be misleading.

Doing a Google search with relevant keywords directed us to a YouTube video uploaded by TV9 Kannada which carried the same visuals. The description of the video reads, “Cyclone Tauktae Effect.”

Digging further, we came across another news report regarding the recent cyclone Tauktae earlier this month. The report carried the same visuals as in the post. According to the report, the video shows visuals related to cyclone Tauktae from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. From 3:13 minutes, one can see the exact visuals that are being shared online.

It is true that Digha in particular faced high tides with strong winds as Cyclone Yaas made landfall along the east coast of West Bengal & Odisha.

However, the video in the viral post is not related to Digha and Cyclone Yaas. Thus, the viral post is misleading.
