Fact Check: No, China Has Not Banned 5G Technology For Safety Reasons; Claim Is Fake

Date:

A newspaper clipping is doing rounds on social media claiming that China has banned 5G technology because of ‘harmful’ radiation. It further claims that the Chinese Premiere has Xi Jingping stopped the installation of 5G towers keeping in view the fatal effect it has on people and birds.

The headline of the article in Hindi read: “चाईना ने 5 जी के घातक रेडीएशन के कारण ट्रायल कराया बंद” (Translation: China stopped trial due to harmful radiations of 5G).

A user shared the post with a caption, “मेरी बात बिलकुल सत्य था भारत सरकार को तुरन्त इस पर विचार करें और 5 जी टावर बन्द ओर 5जी टेस्टिंग पर रोक लगाने का आदेश जारी करें”

(Translation: My point was absolutely true. The government of India should immediately consider this and issue an order to ban 5G towers and 5G testing.).

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post and found it to be fake.

Firstly, we looked for media reports to check if China has banned the 5G technology or installation of 5G towers in the country. We did not find any report to substantiate the claim.

Further, we found various media reports that suggested that China is rapidly expanding the technology. The government, in 2019, built 113,000 5G base stations.

The report states that the Chinese government also called for international cooperation to accelerate global rollout of 5G.

We also found a report by a Chinese media organisation that reported that Chinese state-owned telecommunications operator, Unicom, is also deepening its partnership with Huawei Technologies Co. by jointly unveiling a 5G evolution technology plan for the next five years.

As per the report, there was a need to unveil a 5G evolution technology plan, 5G-Advanced technologies, for the next five years since there was a huge business demand.

Incidentally, while researching on the impact on 5G testing on people, we found a tweet by Press Information Bureau (PIB), Government of India’s nodal information agency, which stated that claims that 5G network testing is harmful to people are fake.

Earlier, NewsMobile had debunked various other posts related to 5G testing in India, including the one claiming that 5G technology used on cellular phones for the Internet is responsible for spreading coronavirus. The links to the articles can be found here, here and here.

In conclusion, upon analysing our findings, it is safe to say that China has not banned 5G technology in the country.
