Fact Check: Visuals Of Overcrowded Market From Lahore Falsely Linked To Delhi During Second Wave Of COVID-19

Date:

A video of an overcrowded marketplace is being shared on social media with a claim that it is from Delhi and was shot in the middle of this raging second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

“जाफ़राबाद नई दिल्ली के दृश्य.. लगता है प्रधानमंत्री मोदी दिल्ली चुनावों के लिए अभी से रैली कर रहें है।” the Facebook post read.

(Translation: Views of Jaffrabad New Delhi …Looks like Prime Minister Modi has already begun holding rallies for Delhi elections.)

The Facebook posts can be seen here, here, here and here.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the claim to be misleading.

We extracted keyframes from the video and ran a Reverse Image Search on them. While investigating, we found that the same video was shared by Facebook users in April with the claim that the video is from Ichhra Bazar in Lahore. The Facebook links are here and here.

“Scenes from Ichhra Bazar Lahore… While hospitals are running out capacity, Price of Oxygen Cylinders is touching skies….That’s our response to Govt’s call of following SOPs,” a user wrote.

The same video was also uploaded on YouTube with the title, ‘Coronavirus failed in Ichra Bazar, Crowd of Public busy in Eid Shopping’.

Other YouTube videos can be seen here and here.

On April 27, 2021, several pictures of inspections conducted at the Ichhra Bazaar were also uploaded on the Facebook page of Assistant Commissioner Model Town Lahore.

“Assistant Commissioner Model Town visited Liberty and Ichhra markets along with police and rangers teams to ensure dispersement of crowds and to take action agasint violations of SOPs. Overall 15 shops were sealed and several warned. Date: 27-04-2021,” the post read.

Multiple Pakistani media organisations also published reports in April on the action taken against COVID-19 protocol violators in Ichhra Bazaar. The report Dawn, dated April 28, 2021, can be seen here.

Another related media report can be seen here.

Hence, from the above information, it is clear that the video is from Pakistan and NOT from India.
