Fact Check: 2016 Picture Shared As OIC Holding Emergency Meeting To Discuss Israel-Palestine Conflict

Amidst the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, a picture is doing rounds on social media with a claim that the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), responding to the attacks on Al Aqsa mosque, called an emergency meeting on May 11, 2021.

“फिलिस्तीन मस्जिद अल अक्सा में मुसलमानों पर हमले को लेकर तुर्की के बाद अब OIC ने भी प्रतिक्रिया ज़ाहिर की है और कल 11/05/2021 को इमरजेंसी मीटिंग बुलाई है!” the caption read.

(Translation: After Turkey, the OIC responded to the attack on Muslims in Palestine Masjid al Aqsa and called an emergency meeting on 11/05/2021)

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post and found the claim to be misleading.

Our first red flag was that despite the pandemic, none of the participants were seen wearing masks or maintaining social distancing protocols.

On putting the image through Reverse Image Search, we found the picture on the Getty Images website. The caption of the picture mentions that the picture was taken on April 14, 2016, at the 13th OIC Summit in Turkey.

The caption of the picture stated that Istanbul held the two-day 13th OIC Summit on April 14-15, 2016, with the attendance of prime ministers and presidents from over 30 countries.

We found more pictures from the same event on the website.

Further, we ran a Google search using keywords and found a tweet by OIC dated May 12, 2021. The tweet mentioned that the meeting to discuss the aggression by Israel took place virtually on Tuesday.

The above information proves that the picture is old and not related to the recent OIC meeting that took place virtually. Hence, the claim is misleading.
