Fact Check: Original News Report Altered & Shared To Suggest External Affairs Minister Broke Quarantine Protocol During G7 Summit

Date:

A video has gone viral on social media claiming that India’s External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar refused to be quarantined after a few Indian delegates at the recent G7 summit tested positive for COVID-19.

A segment of the video also claims that Dr Jaishankar broke isolation norms to meet United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken and British Home Secretary Preeti Patel during the summit.

The video is being shared on Facebook with a caption that reads, “Foreign media reports that Indians behave carelessly at G7. Indian team insulted and advised not to take part in next months meeting.”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be false and misleading.

In the viral video, we noticed that from the 1.03 mark onwards the narrative voice and the presentation style changes completely from the previous parts of the news segment – the voice over is different, and it shows still photos instead of the regular video footage.

It is during this segment that the narrator claims that Dr S Jaishankar refused to follow isolation, despite his delegates testing positive for COVID-19. In this segment, we could no longer see the Sky News logo.

Taking a cue from this, we looked for the original Sky News coverage and found the news segment shown in the first part of the video.

In Sky News’ segment, we were unable to find the segment that made the viral claims about Dr Jaishankar breaking quarantine norms. This, along with the abrupt change in the voice over and presentation style led us to believe that clip has been altered to mislead viewers into believing that it was part of Sky News’ coverage on the G7 summit.

Also, according to news reports on the summit, Dr Jaishankar and three members of his delegation went into isolation on May 5, but he had met Blinken and Patel on May 3, 2021.

The report also states that Jaishankar attended the summit virtually, since he was in quarantine.

“Was made aware yesterday evening of exposure to possible Covid positive cases. As a measure of abundant caution and also out of consideration for others, I decided to conduct my engagements in the virtual mode. That will be the case with the G7 Meeting today as well,” External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar tweeted on May 5, 2021.

On May 8, 2021, in a follow-up tweet, he wrote, ” Good to be back home, all of us having tested negative for Covid. These are difficult times and false alarms do happen. Thank those who sent their good wishes.”

Hence, the claims stating Jaishankar broke quarantine to meet the duo are false.
