Fact Check: Prolonged Usage Of Mask Does NOT Increase Carbon Dioxide Intoxication; Here’s The Truth

Date:

A post is being shared on different social media sites with a claim that prolonged usage of masks is increasing carbon dioxide level in your lungs and causing oxygen deficiency in the body.

The text of the post reads, “कुछ प्रश्न हैं परंतु उनका उत्तर कोई नहीं मिल पा रहा है…-इंसान को दिन भर में 550 लीटर ऑक्सीजन की जरूरत होती है जो वो प्राकृतिक तरीके से लेता है -मास्क का अवरोध लगने से वो 250-300 लीटर ही ले पा रहा है -जब कार्बन डाई ऑक्साइड जो हवा में घुलनी चाहिए थी वो वापस उसके lungs सिस्टम में जा रही है,क्या इसी कारण ऑक्सीजन की जरूरत तो नहीं पड़ रही

(Translation: There are some questions but I can’t find the answer – A person needs 550 litres of oxygen throughout the day, which he takes naturally – Due to obstruction caused by the mask, he can only take 250-300 litres. The carbon dioxide that should have been dissolved in the air is going back into its lungs, is this why people are needing more oxygen)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile did a fact check and found that the claim in the post is false and baseless.

We found that World Health Organisation (WHO) on its website has clarified that the prolonged use of medical masks when properly worn, DOES NOT cause CO2 intoxication nor oxygen deficiency.

It further states that the mask should fit properly so that it is tight enough to allow you to breathe normally.

Government of India’s nodal information agency – the Press Information Bureau (PIB) – also debunked the claim and said that masks do not increase the level of carbon dioxide in the lungs.

The tweet also iterated that is it important to wear a mask properly to stay protected from the virus.

Hence, based on the above information, it can be stated that wearing a mask for long period of time does not reduce the oxygen level or lead to rise of carbon dioxide in the lungs.

The NewsMobile team would also like to reiterate that mask is for your own protection and we request all the readers to please wear masks properly when stepping outside to help break the chain of spread of the virus.
