As COVID-19 deaths surge across the country, a post is being shared on social media in which a person can be seen carrying a dead body on a rickshaw.
The caption of the post suggests that the picture shows the grim state of the country that has been gripped by the deadly virus.
A social media user shared the video with the caption, “ये नया भारत है” (Translation- This is new India)
We found a similar post on Facebook in which a person can be seen carrying a dead body on his cycle.
The post links for both the posts can be seen here, here, here and here.
FACT CHECK
NewsMobile fact-checked the claim and found that the pictures are old and unrelated.

We put the first picture through Reverse Image search and found the distressing picture on Patrika‘s website uploaded on September 1, 2017 (4 years ago). The headline of the report read, ‘रिक्शे पर लाश, इंसानियत हुई शर्मशार’. (Translation: Dead body on a rickshaw, shame on humanity)
According to the report, the incident took place in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district where a woman died by suicide in Gurdha village. The police seized the corpse and kept it in the district hospital. Even after a long wait, when the ambulance was not provided by the district hospital, the family was forced to carry the corpse in a rickshaw.
Further, we found a video published on YouTube dated September 2, 2017, featuring the same picture. The title of the video read, “Hamirpur- ambulance not provided by hospital”
This proves that the above picture is old and has no connection with the pandemic.

We put the second picture through Reverse Image search and found the picture in a report by The Indian Express published on April 19, 2017. The caption of the picture read, ‘In Assam CM’s constituency, man carries brother’s body on cycle’.
The report stated that the picture is from Majuli, Assam where a man had to carry the body of his 18-year-old younger brother on a bicycle due to the absence of a motorable road. The report was published on April 19, 2017.
Hence, from the above fact check, it is clear that the pictures are old and not related to the ongoing coronavirus crisis.
