Fact Check: 2019 Photo Of Violence In Vidyasagar College Linked To Post-Poll Clashes In Bengal

Date:

Following multiple reports of post-poll violence in West Bengal, an image started doing rounds on social media where a mob can be seen in front of a building on fire.

The image was shared on Facebook with a caption that reads, “Democracy in Bengal has now turned into violence. You vote for the Trinamool Congress to stop the Bharatiya Janata Party? Once again, it has been proved that the public is responsible for voting in the wrong place.”

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be misleading.

The Reverse Image Search led us to a news article published in 2019 which carried the same viral image. According to the article, the image shows the clash between Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) supporters and Trinamool Congress (TMC) cadres at Vidyasagar College in May 2019.

We also found another news article which carried the same image. The news article also talked about the violence that erupted between BJP and TMC supporters at Vidyasagar College in 2019.

Hence, it is evident from the above information that a two-year-old photo has been falsely linked to post-poll violence in West Bengal. Therefore, the viral claim is misleading.
