FACT CHECK

We checked the post and found that posts appealing for the adoption of children who have lost their parents during COVID-19 are illegal.

Ministry of Women and Child Development in a series of tweets has reiterated that ‘it is illegal to give or take orphan children of anyone else in adoption’.

“It is illegal to give or take orphan children of any one else in adoption. Such children should be taken to Child welfare committee, which will take necessary action in the best interest of the child,” the tweet read.

Union WCD Minister Smriti Irani also issued the same warning.

“*IMPORTANT Thread* If you come to know of any child who has lost both parents to COVID and has no one to take care of her/him, inform Police or Child Welfare Committee of your district or contact Childline 1098. It is your legal responsibility,” she tweeted.

The government’s nodal agency, PIB, also put out a post stating that ‘a process has to be followed to adopt a child’.

IPS officer Monika Bhardwaj also shared the helpline numbers to help such children.
“To help children who have lost both their parents to COVID or to report any illegal adoption advertisement/activity:
