Fact Check: Video Of Dead Bodies At A Gujarat Crematorium Linked To Situation In Maharashtra

Date:

A video showing people waiting outside crematoriums with dead bodies is being shared on social media with a claim that it is from Maharashtra.

A social media user shared the video with the caption, “Covid-19 second wave situation in Maharashtra is very serious. No place for the dead bodies in every hospital.”

The post links can be seen here, here and here.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral claim and found it to be misleading.

We started our investigation by doing a Reverse Image Search on the keyframes of the video and found a video on YouTube published by a regional media organisation, BRG News, dated April 8, 2021. The title of the video can be translated to ‘Surat Umra cremation viral video: 40 bodies waiting for the funeral in Surat’s Umra, Token system’

With that information, we ran another search and found a snapshot of the video in a report published by Patrika on April 9, 2021. The title of the video in Hindi can be translated to ‘Funeral of 75 dead bodies in one day, the record says only 14‘.

The report stated that the state’s health officials recorded eight to ten COVID-19 deaths in a day but a video of Umra, Surat cremation ground went viral showing more than 15 dead bodies at the crematorium site.

We found another report by Dainik Bhaskar in which a snapshot from the video can be seen. The report confirms that the video is from Surat, Gujarat.

As per the video, 40 bodies of COVID-19 victims reached the Umra crematorium in Surat on Thursday in a span of few hours. Due to overcrowding, a token system was started and the families of the deceased persons had to wait for 3 to 4 hours for performing last rites.

Hence, from the above fact check, it is clear that the video shows a cremation ground in Gujarat, not Maharashtra, and the post therefore is misleading.
