A powerful earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter Scale jolted Assam and other parts of Northeast as well as North Bengal on Wednesday morning. Two aftershocks were also recorded within minutes of the first quake.
The National Centre for Seismology said the quake’s epicentre is in the Sonitpur district at a depth of 17 km. Meanwhile, two aftershocks “one measuring 4.3 on Richter took place with its epicentre 30 km away from Tezpur town and the second measuring 4.4 on Richter scale, 39 km from Tezpur”, were also experienced.

There were two aftershocks following the first major earthquake, one at 7.58 am and another at 8.01 am. The two aftershocks measured 4.3 and 4.4 on the Richter Scale.
Soon after the earthquake, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that he was praying for the well-being of the people and urged everyone to stay alert.

He said that PM Narendra Modi has taken stock of the situation and had assured all the support to the state.

Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted about the quake and also shared photos of broken walls inside a building and of a broken boundary wall.

Meanwhile, PM Narendra Modi spoke to Assam CM Sonowal over the earthquake. In a tweet, PM Modi said, “Spoke to Assam CM Shri @sarbanandsonwal Ji regarding the earthquake in parts of the state. Assured all possible help from the Centre. I pray for the well-being of the people of Assam.”

Home Minister Amit Shah in a tweet said, ‘Have spoken to Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal to assess the condition in different parts of the state after an earthquake. Central govt stands firmly with our sisters and brothers of Assam. Praying for everyone’s safety and well-being’.

Videos emerging from Assam show walls have collapsed, windows were shattered in some areas due to the impact of the earthquake. Cracks have been spotted in some buildings in Assam. There are no reports of casualties or injuries so far.
