Fact Check: Picture Of Typhoid Patients In Maharashtra Shared As COVID-19 Patients In Gujarat

Date:

A picture showing some patients lying on the floor with bare minimum medical facilities is being shared on social media. It is being claimed that the picture shows COVID-19 patients in Gujarat.

The text on the picture read: यह तस्वीर है गुजरात मॉडल के तापी जिले की जहा कोरोना मरीजो का इलाज तंबुओं में हो रहा है, सरकार ने दुनिया का सबसे बड़ा स्टेच्यू और क्रिकेट मैदान तो बना लिया बस गरीबो के लिए अस्पताल नही बनाया।

(Translation: This picture shows corona patients of Gujarat in Tapi district where COVID-19 patients are being treated in tents, the government has built the world’s largest statue and cricket ground, but not a hospital for the poor.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post and found that the claim attached to the picture is false.

We ran a Reverse Image Search on the picture and found the picture in a video by a Marathi news organisation, Navapur Express News, dated April 20, 2021. The headline of the report read, “नवापूर : स्वत:ची खाट घेऊन या, झाडावर सलाईन लावून घ्या शेकडो रुग्ण बरे झाल्याचा दावा.” (Translation: Navapur: Bring your own bed, apply saline on the tree. Hundreds of patients claim to have been cured)

As per the video, these visuals are from villages that are on the Maharashtra side of the Maharashtra-Gujarat border. It further mentions that the patients are suffering from typhoid and not coronavirus.

Further, we found a report by Dainik Bhaskar dated April 20, 2021, featuring the same picture. The headline of the report in Hindi can be translated to ‘New trouble amidst Corona: Typhoid spread on Maharashtra-Gujarat border, treatment of patients in tents, wooden sticks being used instead for drip in the absence of stands’.

As per the report, the picture shows patients suffering from typhoid, which has hit 10-12 bordering villages on the Maharashtra side near Maharashtra-Gujarat border. They are being treated under tents as the hospital beds are occupied with COVID-19 patients.

We found another report by a local news organisation covering the issue. Read the report here.

Hence, based on the above information, we can say that the picture shows patients suffering from typhoid in a village in Maharashtra, not COVID-19 patients in Gujarat. Hence, the claim is false.
