FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above video and found the claim shared with it to be false.

On extracting the keyframes and performing a Reverse Image Search on them, we found that the same video was carried by several news outlets too.

We found that the video was shared by The Times of India on April 15, with a caption, “A video of a Delhi police cop being assaulted by some people inside a house has gone viral on social media. The cop is being repeatedly slapped and abused. Delhi Police has initiated a probe after the incident came into their knowledge. showing an on-duty policeman being assaulted by a gym-owner on April 1 in the Uttam Nagar area of Delhi.”

As per a report published in The Print, the policeman who is being assaulted in the video has been identified as Sushil. He is posted at the Baba Haridas Nagar police station and was earlier posted as the personnel security officer (PSO) to a person named Sanjay Gupta, a property dealer by profession.

On April 1, Sushil and Gupta’s relative named Ashwani got into an argument following which the policeman was allegedly abused and beaten up by Gupta’s younger brother Rinku and his accomplice Kaku.

A day after the video surfaced online, police have registered a case against a gym owner and his associates.

The police said two cases of extortion were registered by Sanjay Gupta in 2016 and 2018 respectively after which he was provided PSOs.

Outlook and The Indian Express also reported the incident.

Contrary to the viral claim, none of the reports state that the incident is linked to West Bengal or that the policeman was assaulted by a BJP leader.

Hence, a video showing a gym owner assaulting a police official in Delhi is being shared with a false claim the visuals show a BJP leader assaulting a cop.
