Fact Check: Road Safety Awareness Video Viral With False Communal Angle

Date:

A video has surfaced on social media platforms showing a group of people in skull cap brandishing swords and guns after two of them were allegedly confronted by locals for not wearing a helmet while riding a bike to a mosque. The video is being shared with a claim that it serves as a ‘reality check’ for torchbearers of secularism in India.

A Facebook user shared the video with a caption in Hindi which translated to, “The torchbearers of secularism must watch this video. When Muslim devotees were confronted for not wearing a helmet while driving, several ‘peacefuls’ gathered with guns and swords. Does the police ever let go of Hindus flouting traffic norms without a challan.”

The post is being widely shared on Facebook and Twitter with the same narrative.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above video and found the claim shared with it to be false.

We extracted the keyframes of the video and performed a Reverse Image Search, which led us to a longer version of the video uploaded on ‘Helmet Man India’ YouTube channel on March 20, 2021. The extended video was also uploaded on the ‘Helmet Man‘ Facebook page.

In the video, ‘Helmet Man’, Raghvendra Kumar, can be seen educating a bunch of youth about the importance of wearing a helmet while driving. The video was being recorded by several people present at the location. At the end of the video, Raghvendra also gave a helmet to the biker, asking the viewers to share the video to spread awareness.

News Mobile reached out to Raghvendra Kumar who confirmed to us that there is no communal angle to this.

“I have been educating people about road safety for the last seven years. So, we took this initiative in the Kaimur district of Bihar as an accident was reported recently here. We first spoke with the ‘Maulvi’ of the mosque and then decided to educate the local youth about road safety who stay away from wearing helmets while riding bikes. One can clearly see in the complete video, the local youth present over there took our awareness campaign in the right spirit. Now, some people are sharing some clips with a false narrative for their own benefit,” he told NewsMobile.

Hence, the video was aimed at spreading awareness around road safety and there is no communal angle to it.
