NewsMobile Explainer: What Is Leading To The Surge In COVID-19 Cases In India?

Date:

The intensity of the coronavirus pandemic has increased and it is spreading at a much faster rate in India.

India’s COVID tally

  • India on Wednesday hit a new peak as it reported 1,15,736 new COVID-19 cases, the highest number of daily cases ever since the pandemic began.
  • 630 deaths were reported across the country over the past 24 hours.
  • While 59,856 people were discharged, the total active caseload in the country stands at 8,43,473.
  • 1,17,92,135 people have recovered so far from the deadly disease, even as 1,66,177 have lost their lives to the pandemic.

What is leading to the surge?

NewsMobile spoke to Dr. Fuad Halim on the current COVID-19 crisis and this is what he said:

The acceleration rate is very quick. In March India was reporting roughly 11,000 cases while on April 5 it crossed the 1-lakh mark for the first time and today the country has reported the biggest spike since the outbreak began.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Tuesday said one of the major reasons for the surge in cases was people becoming lax towards following COVID-appropriate behaviour and urged them to take up mass awareness campaigns to re-instill the importance of such measures among the masses.

Effective public health measures after the first wave of pandemic

Globally, following the first wave, some countries have not maintained effective public health measures between the first wave and the second wave.

For eg, countries, such as New Zealand and Vietnam have done better than others countries.

Countries that successfully maintained effective public health measures after or during the first wave are the countries that have contained the virus or at least bend the covid graphic. Unfortunately, India missed the opportunity.

Vaccine administration

India started inoculations with frontline and health workers and went on to people above 60 and those over 45. In the latest round, all above 45 are being vaccinated.

So far, over eight crore people have been vaccinated.

India could have aimed to vaccinate a large percentage of the population.
