Fact Check: No, Mamata Banerjee Did NOT Say That She Will Make Hindus Cry If She Gets 42 Seats

Date:

As West Bengal gets into election mode, a post containing a newspaper clipping is being shared on social media.

The headline of the article read, “৪২টা আসন দিন হিন্দু কীভাবে কাঁদা তে হয় দেখিয়ে দেব: মমতা (Give me 42 seats and I’ll show you how to make the Hindus cry: Mamata).

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the newspaper clipping and found it to be morphed.

When we analysed the clipping carefully, we found that two words– হিন্দু (Hindu) and কাঁদা তে (cry)-had different fonts and size in comparison to the rest of the script.

We then ran a keyword search and found a report by Bartaman Patrika dated April 20, 2019. However, the original headline read, “৪২টা আসন দিন, দিল্লি কীভাবে কাঁপাতে হয় দেখিয়ে দেব: মমতা (Give me 42 seats and I will show you how to shake Delhi: Mamata).

We also found that the original newspaper clipping was uploaded by other Facebook users as well. See the link here.

We then compared both the newspaper clippings and found that in the morphed clipping, the word for Delhi ‘দিল্লী’ has been changed to Hindu ‘হিন্দু’ and shake up ‘কাঁপাতে’ has been replaced with cry ‘কাঁদাতে’.

Hence, from the above information, it is clear that the viral newspaper clipping in circulation is false.
