FACT CHECK
We checked the university’s website and found that the university had its first convocation on February 29, 2020. Several photos from the occasion uploaded on the website show the students were sporting scarves of multiple colours.
The press note on the university’s website read, “The programme was organised in a typical Indian tradition and attire.” There was no mention of any specific colour scarf.
We also found a picture of a girl in the viral post which proves that the picture is taken from the same convocation ceremony.
We also found that it was not the first time students opted for Indian attire for their convocation ceremony. In 2015, students of Banaras Hindu University replaced gowns with sari and dhoti kurta.
Students of IIT Bhubaneshwar also opted for ethnic wear at their convocation in 2013. Read the report here.
The above information proves that Uttaranchal University did not mandate a saffron scarf at the convocation ceremony. Moreover, it was not the first time students opted for ethnic clothes on their convocation.
