Fact Check: Old Video Of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal Shared As Him Supporting Farm Laws

Date:

A video of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal talking about agricultural reforms is being shared on social media with a claim that Kejriwal is supporting the latest farm laws enacted by the union government.

“मोदी जी द्वारा लाये गए बिल को पढ़ने के बाद अरविंद केजरीवाल जी ने बिल को सुपोर्ट करने का फैसला किया । हम केजरीवाल जी का हार्दिक धन्यवाद करते है ।” the Facebook post read.

(Translation: After reading the bill brought by Modi, Arvind Kejriwal decided to support the Bill. We heartily thank Kejriwal ji)

The video was also shared by BJP’s Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga (archive).

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the posts and found the claim to be false.

We heard the video carefully and noticed that Kejriwal was talking about the minimum support price (MSP). Moreover, we also notice CII written in the background.

Based on this, we ran a search and found the video of the same conference on the official YouTube channel of the Aam Aadmi Party dated March 10, 2014. The title of the video read: Arvind Kejriwal Addressing At CII.

We then ran another keyword search and found the video of the conference on the YouTube channel of Confederation of Indian Industry dated February 17, 2014.

The description of the video read: Interaction with Mr Arvind Kejriwal, National Executive Member, Aam Aadmi Party at the 6th CII National Council Meeting 2013 – 2014 on 17th February 2014 at New Delhi.

However, we noticed that the viral video clip can be seen at 7:22 min into the video.

“Sir, agricultures is a very important issue, I completely concede and there are a lot of dimensions to it. And the most important of those dimensions is agricultural pricing. The kind of pricing we are giving and the restriction that we have placed on the farmers…we’ll have to remove those controls. A farmer can only sell in a Mandi, why not anywhere else? Why not in other states? We have placed way too many restrictions on a small farmer and everyone is frustrated due to those regulations. We need to deregulate it. I would like to give a small example. I don’t remember exactly whether it was wheat or rice…As per Haryana government records, the cost of production of that particular product is Rs 1,580 per quintal. And the minimum support price is Rs 1,250. You are not even giving him (the farmer) a cost at the minimum support price, so how will he live? The Swaminathan report says that we should give them a cost plus 50% of the profits. If you start giving the farmer the profit they have earned…but there are many other complicated things…I think we need to do many more things in agriculture,” he said.

Hence, it is evident that the video is OLD and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal was NOT supporting the farm laws, which were enacted in 2020.

As a matter of fact, Delhi CM as been quite vocal about his opposition to the farm Laws.

According to a report published in Hindustan Times on February 21, 2021, Kejriwal described the three new farm laws as a “death warrant for the country’s farmers.”

Earlier, NewsMobile had debunked a similar video where several lines from an interview of Arvind Kejriwal were edited to make it look as though the Delhi CM is supporting the farm laws.

https://newsmobile.in/articles/2021/02/02/fact-check-did-delhi-cm-arvind-kejriwal-support-farm-laws-heres-the-truth/

Hence, from the above fact check, it is clear that the video is OLD and the claim is false.
