Fact Check: Ahead Of Polls, Video From Assam Falsely Shared As That From West Bengal

Date:

Ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, a video is doing the rounds on social media with the claim that people in West Bengal are destroying posters of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“तड़ीपार को 200 सिट का तोहफा पेश करते हुवे, सोनार बँगला की जनता।”, read the Facebook post.

Translation: The people of Sonar Bangla presenting a gift of 200 seats to Tadipar.

Here’s the link to the post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the video and found it to be misleading.

Firstly, we started the investigation by looking closely at the video. We Noticed ‘Time8’ watermark on the top right corner. We then used the keyword and ran a search on Facebook and found that the same video was aired on March 10, 2021, on Time 8’s page.

The title of the video reads, “To get tickets, Shiladitya put up banner-posters. His workers broke those poster-banners.”

We then took the keyword ‘Shiladitya’ and ran a  Google search that led us to a report by NDTV that said Assam BJP MLA Shiladitya Dev gave his resignation to the party (BJP) on March 11 after he was denied a ticket to contest in the elections.

Further, we reached out to Time8 on Facebook and they confirm to us that the video is from Assam: Video is from Assam as u can hear from audio it says ‘Sarbanand Sonowal Murdabad’ who is Assam CM….we had rightly done the story as from Assam but this user has downloaded the same and shared with a misleading caption (Sic).

All the information put together proves that the video in circulation is misleading and is not from West Bengal.
