Fact Check: Did PM Modi Visit Hindu Refugees In Rajasthan In 1990? Here’s The Truth

Date:

A picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is being shared on social media with a claim that the picture was taken when he visited and met Hindu refugees in 1990 at a camp in Barmer, Rajasthan after they were displaced from Pakistan.

“ये 31 वर्ष पुरानी दुर्लभ तस्वीर है, जब नरेंद्र मोदी बाड़मेर में पाकिस्तान से विस्थापित हिंदुओं से मिलने उनके कैम्प में पहुँचे थे. तब वो ना गुजरात के मुख्यमंत्री थे और ना ही देश के प्रधानमंत्री थे. दुख, मुशीबत मे लोगों के साथ खड़ा होना मोदी जी की फितरत में शामिल है।” The Facebook post read.

(Translation: This rare picture was taken 31 years ago when Narendra Modi reached a camp in Barmer to meet the Hindus displaced from Pakistan. He was neither the Chief Minister of Gujarat nor the Prime Minister of the country. He is always there for people in distress).

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the claim to be false.

On putting the picture through Reverse Image Search, we found the picture on Prime Minister Modi’s website- narendramodi.in. The headline of the article read, “Immersed in nation from a very young age”, whereas the caption read, ‘Narendra Modi in a village of Gujarat’.

As per the description of the picture, around the year 1977, Narendra Modi was made the ‘Sambhaag Pracharak’ (equivalent of a regional organiser) as an appreciation of his activism and organisational work during the preceding years. He was given charge of South and Central Gujarat. It further states that his travels across Gujarat continued and increased through the early 1980s. This gave him the opportunity to visit every Taluka and almost every village in the state.

The description does not mention anything about Hindus displaced from Pakistan.

We further found the same picture in a report by DNA dated September 17, 2015. The heading of the picture read, “Narendra Modi in 1980s”. The caption read, “Narendra Modi in a village in Gujarat in his 1980s- Indian History Pics”.

We also searched on Google with the keywords ‘Modi Hindu displaced Pakistan Barmer Rajasthan and found no photo of PM meeting with persecuted Hindus from Pakistan in Barmer.

But we did find a report by The Hindu dated April 12, 2014, stating that in his maiden mass-contact meeting in Barmer constituency the then BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, Modi, said that Pakistani Hindu refugees will be treated like other Indian citizens.

The above information proves that the picture was taken in the early 1980s in a village in Gujarat and not in 1990 in Rajasthan.
