FACT CHECK
NewsMobile fact-checked the picture and found that the viral picture is morphed.
When we put the image through Reverse Image Search, we found the picture on ‘Alamy‘ and ‘Getty Images‘ websites, published by Mark Garlick, a photographer based out of England. The caption of the picture read, ‘Sunset on Mars, illustration – stock illustration’.
As per the description, the image shows an illustration of a sunset on Mars. Dust and small particles suspended in the Martian atmosphere scatter light in the direction of the Sun.
We also found the picture on Mark A Garlick’s Twitter handle, published on March 15, 2021. He mentions that the picture is an artwork and expresses his displeasure over his photo being shared with the fake claim.
This ARTWORK is doing the rounds on Twitter, after some idiot removed my name from it and then labelled it ‘First photo of a sunset on Mars’. It’s bullshit.
16k likes so far, and still going. For a f******* fake.

We also looked for the first picture of a sunset on Mars and found that NASA had published the image as one of the first images of a sunset as seen from the surface of Mars on May 1, 2019. The picture was taken on August 21, 1976 and it was different than the one in circulation.
Hence, the above information proves that the picture is an illustration of the sunset on Mars and not an actual picture.
