India reported 40,953 new COVID-19 cases, the biggest daily-rise since November 29, 23,653 recoveries and 188 deaths in the last 24 hours, as per the Union Health Ministry Saturday morning update.
India first time reported over 40,000 cases on July 19 last year, when it recorded 40,425 cases. Presently, Maharashtra, Punjab, Kerala, Karnataka and Gujarat are the five states that have recorded the highest single-day surge since Friday, according to government data.
Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh account for 80.63 per cent of the daily new cases, according to the Health Ministry.
With the addition of fresh infections, the total cases in the country reached 1,15,55,284, including 2,88,394 active cases and 1,11,07,332 recoveries.
The death toll stands at 1,59,558 including 188 fatalities recorded in the last 24 hours. The country has been recording more than 20,000 cases since last week.
Meanwhile, as many as 4,20,63,392 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in the country so far.
