Ambrish Mithal, MD, DM, and an endocrinologist, was presented the Laureate Award from the Endocrine Society of US for International Excellence.
This award is presented to an endocrinologist who has made exceptional contributions to the field in geographic areas with underdeveloped resources for hormone health research, education, clinical practice, or administration.
He is the Chairman and Head of the Endocrinology and Diabetes Department at Max Healthcare (pan Max), a group of 16 hospitals.
He is the domain expert on the Governing Board of National Health Authority (2019) of India and President of AIIMS Gorakhpur.
Over the past 25 years, Dr. Mithal has made pioneering contributions to the growth of endocrinology, establishing and running endocrine teaching programs, developing models for high-quality endocrine services, and conducting and guiding research on topics of direct relevance to India.
Dr Mithal has been the recipient of the Fogarty Fellowship (Harvard Medical School), Japan International Cooperation Agency Fellowship, Boy Frame award of the ASBMR, JOF Amgen Health Professionals Award and the Springer citation prize for his paper on “Global Vitamin D Status” 2013.
He has received the 10F President’s Award (2016). His current research interests include vitamin D nutrition, primary hyperparathyroidism, osteoporosis, cardiovascular outcome trials in diabetes and NAFLD.
His efforts are recognized by numerous prestigious national and international awards, which include the highest civilian honours – the Padma Bhushan and the BC Roy Award, from the President of India, and the International Osteoporosis Foundation’s President’s Award.
He carried out seminal research on fluoride toxicity, a condition affecting over 60 million people, and investigated iodine deficiency with studies that led to the universal salt iodation program.
He founded India’s first bone density measurement and osteoporosis service and established osteoporosis as a serious national health problem.
