FACT CHECK
NewsMobile fact-checked the above post and found it to be misleading.
Firstly, on putting the keyframes of the video through Reverse Image Search, we found the same video on Dainik Jagran‘s YouTube channel published on September 28, 2020. The title of the video read, “In Sambhal, the gangster went to the police station to surrender with a placard around the neck as he feared his encounter. UP”
As per the video, the man begging the policeman for his life was a wanted gangster of UP named Naeem. There was a reward of Rs 15,000 in his name.
Further, we found that the incident was covered by Aaj Tak on September 27, 2020. The headline of the report read, “UP: Gangster reached the police station to surrender with a placard around a neck, said- Do not shoot.” (Translated)
The incident was covered by other media organisations as well. Read reports here and here.
However, we found that a former MP from BSP, Dhananjay Singh, surrendered before a special MP-MLA court in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. There was a bounty of Rs 25,000 on him for his involvement in the murder of history-sheeter Ajit Singh.
In conclusion, upon analysing our findings, it is safe to say that the man surrendering in from of the police in the video is not a former BSP MP but a wanted criminal in UP. Hence, the claim is misleading.
