Fact Check: No, The US Has NOT Restored Preferential Trade Status For India Under GSP

Date:

A message is being shared on social media with a claim that the Joe Biden administration in the US has restored India’s designation as beneficiary developing countries under the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) programme.

The GSP is the largest and oldest US trade preference programme and is designed to promote economic development by allowing duty-free entry for thousands of products from designated beneficiary countries.

In June 2019, the then US President Donald Trump had terminated India’s GSP designation after determining that it has not assured the US that it will provide “equitable and reasonable access” to its markets.

A Facebook user shared the message in Hindi, which reads, “अमेरिका ने भारत को GSP सूची मे डाल दिया, अब अमेरिका मे भारतीय प्रॉडक्ट्स बेचने पर टेक्स नही लगेगा, बाईडेन भी मोदी भक्त ही निकला.”

(Translation: America put India in the GSP list. Now there will be no tax levied on selling Indian products in the US. Biden also turned out to be a Modi admirer)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found it to be false.

Firstly, we searched for related news items but couldn’t find any credible media report to support the claim.

We then checked the website of the US Trade Representative and found no such news about India’s entry in the GSP list.

We also checked the US GSP-eligible beneficiaries countries list and couldn’t find India in the list. Although it was last updated in November 2020 and there was no new list on the website.

The United States Trade Representative on March 1, 2021, released President Joe Biden’s 2021 Trade Agenda and 2020 Annual Report. Even in that report, there was no mention of India’s entry in the GSP list.

Hence, from the above information, we can say that the viral message about the US putting India on the GSP list is false.
