COVID-19 | Top 10 Global Developments This Morning

The total number of global Covid-19 cases has topped 117 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 2.60 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

Here are the top 10 developments this morning:

1. 1. The United States continues to remain the worst-hit nation across the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic as cumulative cases in the country surpassed the 29-million mark on Wednesday (local time).
   2. According to Johns Hopkins University, as many as 29,096,450 people have detected positive for the COVID-19. The death toll in the country stands at 527,705. On Saturday (local time), US President Joe Biden announced that the USD 1,400 coronavirus stimulus cheques will be distributed from March onwards.The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 6,389 within one day to 1,392,945, with the death toll adding by 210 to 37,757, the country’s health ministry said on Tuesday.
      According to the ministry, 7,496 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 1,210,877. The virus has spread to all the country’s 34 provinces.
   3. 340 different coronavirus tests have so far won emergency use authorisation (EUA), including one that can be used at home without a prescription to detect the virus, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has said.
      “The Cue COVID-19 Test for Home and Over The Counter (OTC) Use is a molecular test that can be used completely at home without a prescription by people with or without COVID-19 symptoms.
   4. The US House of Representatives on Wednesday approved the Senate-passed version of the USD 1.9 trillion Covid-19 relief bill, sending it to President Joe Biden’s desk for signature. The House of Representatives voted 220-211 to pass the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.
   5. “I can announce that the president will sign the bill at the White House on Friday afternoon,” Psaki told reporters at an afternoon briefing as quoted by The Hill. “Once it is passed, the bill text will be checked, rechecked, printed and signed by the appropriate leaders in the House and Senate. The House clerks will then deliver it to the White House for the president’s signature. We expect that delivery to happen sometime tomorrow and then the president will sign it on Friday,” she said.
   6. World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has called on pharmaceutical companies to scale up the production of coronavirus vaccines in developing countries to overcome supply shortage.
   7. “Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on 9 March called on COVID-19 vaccine manufacturers to do more to ramp up production in developing countries to combat the vaccine supply shortage that is excluding many lower-income nations from access. In remarks to an event hosted by the UK think tank Chatham House, she said cooperation on trade, and action at the WTO, would help accelerate vaccine scale-up,” the WTO said in a press release late on Tuesday.
   8. Another 5,926 people in Britain have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 4,234,924, according to official figures released Wednesday.
      The country also reported another 190 coronavirus-related deaths. The total number of coronavirus-related deaths in Britain now stands at 124,987. These figures only include the deaths of people who died within 28 days of their first positive test.
   9. Kuwait reported on Wednesday 1,333 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 204,388.
      The Kuwaiti Health Ministry also announced three more deaths, taking the death toll to 1,144. The tally of recoveries nationwide rose by 988 to 189,155, while 14,089 coronavirus-related patients are receiving treatment. Abdullah Al-Bader, assistant undersecretary for medicine affairs in the ministry, said on Wednesday that a new batch of coronavirus vaccines will arrive on March 14.
   10. The number of people, who have died of the coronavirus in Brazil, has increased by a record 2,286 to 270,656 over the past 24 hours, the national Ministry of Health said.
       The number of confirmed cases has risen by 79,876 to 11,202,305 within the same period of time. More than 9.91 million people have recovered since the start of the outbreak. Brazil comes third on a global tally of coronavirus cases after the United States and India, which have recorded more than 29.13 million and 11.26 million COVID-19 patients, respectively. In terms of the death toll, Brazil comes second following the United States where over 528,000 people have died of the disease.
