As many as 18,327 new COVID-19 cases and 108 deaths were reported in India in the last 24 hours, the union health ministry informed on Saturday. The country’s overall COVID-19 cases tally has reached 1,11,92,088, including 1,80,304 active cases while the death toll has mounted to 1,57,656.

A total of 22,06,92,677 samples have been tested for COVID-19 up to March 5, 2021, of these, 7,51,935 samples were tested on Friday, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu added 82 percent of the total new cases which were reported in the last 24 hours in the country.
Kerala, Chhattisgarh, and Tamil Nadu have shown a reduction in the active cases in the last 24 hours whereas Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Haryana displayed a rise in the active cases during the same period.
Over 1.90 cr COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in India
Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare informed that the cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 1.90 crores on Friday. The countrywide vaccination drive was rolled out on January 16, 2021, and the vaccination of the frontline workers (FLWs) started on February 2, 2021. The next phase of COVID-19 vaccination has commenced from March 1, 2021, for those who are over 60 years of age and for people aged 45 and above with specified co-morbid conditions. “A total of 1,90,40,175 vaccine doses have been given, as per the provisional report till 7 pm today,” read the press release by the Ministry.

These include 68,96,529 healthcare workers (HCWs) who have taken the first dose and 32,94,612 HCWs who have taken the second dose, 62,94,755 FLWs (first dose), 1,23,191 FLWs (second dose), 21,17,862 beneficiaries more than 60 years old and 3,13,226 beneficiaries aged 45 and above with specific co-morbidities.

85-year-old Dalai Lama Takes First Dose of Vaccine in Dharmashala
Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, who is revered as a ‘living god’, on Saturday took his first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine in a state-run hospital near his residence in Dharmshala.

Maharashtra reports over 10,000 new cases, Mumbai record 1,173
There was a huge spike of over 10,000 new Covid cases in Maharashtra on Friday, the largest number recorded in a single day so far, this year. The overall case count of the state jumped to 21,98,399, as the state reported 10,216 fresh cases on Friday. In Mumbai, there were 1,173 new cases, the highest single-day count this year, with cases crossing the 1,000-plus mark for the first time since November 28, 2020.
Also, “The primary endpoint of phase III clinical trial is based on the first occurrence of PCR-confirmed symptomatic (mild, moderate, or severe) Covid-19 with onset at least 14 days after the second study vaccination in serologically negative (to SARS-CoV-2) adult participants at baseline,” it stated.
The global COVID-19 cases have climbed to 113 million, while the death toll due to the virus crossed 2.5 million, according to Johns Hopkins University.
