Coronavirus LIVE Updates | After PM Modi, Union Ministers Amit Shah, S Jaishankar Get COVID-19 Vaccine

India on Monday commenced the next phase of the world’s largest Covid-19 vaccination drive for people over 60 years of age and those above 45 with co-morbidities.

Hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the nationwide second phase of the vaccination by getting himself inoculated, Union Ministers Amit Shah and Minister for External Affairs S Jaishankar too got their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

“Got my jab. For the curious, it was #Covaxin. Felt secure, will travel safely,” he tweeted after getting the shot.

Registration for the eligible people opened at 9 am to register and book appointments for vaccination, anytime and anywhere, using the COWIN 2.0 portal or through other IT applications such as Arogya Setu etc.

Meanwhile, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu received the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine in Chennai.

PM Modi took the first dose of Covaxin, India’s homegrown coronavirus vaccine developed by biotechnology firm Bharat Biotech and the Indian Council of Medical Research, addressing the hesitancy over the COVID-19 vaccine.

PM Modi took the first dose of the vaccine at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi. “Took my first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at AIIMS,” PM Modi tweeted with his picture of receiving the jab.

“Remarkable how our doctors and scientists have worked in quick time to strengthen the global fight against COVID-19,” the Prime Minister added.

Besides, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his Odisha counterpart Naveen Patnaik also got covid vaccine jab. Bihar CM also announced that the vaccination will be absolutely free in the entire Bihar.

“Such facility will be made available even at private hospitals, and will be facilitated by the state government,” added Kumar, who also took the first dose of Covid-19 vaccine.

Meanwhile, India reported 15,510 new corona cases, 11,288 discharges and 106 deaths in the last 24 hours, as per the Union Health Ministry Total cases. The total recover cases in the country now stands at 1,10,96,731, total discharges at 1,07,86,457 with 1,57,157 deaths so far. The active cases count in India is 1,68,627 with more than 1 crore vaccinated against the virus.

The global COVID-19 cases have climbed to 113 million, while the death toll due to the virus crossed 2.5 million, according to Johns Hopkins University.
