Fact Check: Old Video From 2008 Shared As Israeli Forces Firing At A Mosque In Palestine

Date:

A video is being shared on social media with a claim that Israeli forces opened fire at the minaret of a mosque in Palestine after they heard the sound of Azaan coming from the mosque.

“इजरायल बॉर्डर के पास फलस्तीन में बनी मस्जिद से अज़ान की आवाज सुनकर इस्राइली फोज ने मस्जिद की मीनार पर गोली बारी करदी इतनी गोलियां चलाने के बाद भी मीनार पूरी शान से खड़ी रही ओर मोमिन ने बिना डरे आजान पूरी,” the Facebook post read.

(Translation: On hearing the sound of Azaan from the mosque in Palestine near the Israeli border, the Israeli army shot at the mosque’s tower, even after firing so many bullets, the tower was still standing.)

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the claim to be false.

We extracted keyframes from the video through InVid tool and found that the same video was uploaded on YouTube on March 16, 2008, by documentary filmmaker Michael Moore.

The description of the video read: Cpl. Jon M. Turner’s (3/8 Kilo Company, 1st Platoon, U.S. Marine Corps) testimony on March 15th, 2008 included these two videos of Turner’s squad firing on Mosques unprovoked, a violation of international law.

Based on this, we ran another keyword search and found a blog by Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW).

‘Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan featured testimony from U.S. veterans who served in those occupations, giving an accurate account of what is really happening day in and day out, on the ground’, the blogpost read.

We then ran a search using the keyword ‘Winter Soldier Jon Turner’ and found multiple YouTube videos of his testimony about his posting in Iraq. The video can be seen here, here and here.

We found the viral clip of the mosque at 6:27 min of the video.

“This is after one of the guys in a weapons company had gotten shot. This is a way that we would take out our aggression. For those of you who don’t know, it is illegal to shoot into a mosque unless you were taking fire from it. There was no fire that was taken from that mosque. It was shot into because we were angry,” he testified.

Hence, from the above information, it is evident that the video is from Iraq and has nothing to do with the Israeli army.
