COVID-19 LIVE Updates | Vaccination Coverage In India Crosses 1.34 Crores, Global Death Toll Tops 2.5 Million

The nationwide COVID-19 vaccination to healthcare workers and frontline workers crossed 1.34 crores coverage on Friday.

As per the provisional report issued by the Health Ministry, till Day-42 of the vaccination drive, the 1.34 crore vaccination doses were registered through 2,78,915 sessions. This includes the first dose for 66.21 lakh healthcare workers, the second dose for 20.32 lakh healthcare workers, and the first dose for 48.18 lakh frontline workers.

From March 1, the Covid vaccination will be extended to people aged 60 years and above and those aged above 45 years with comorbidities, it stated.

India has reported 16,577 new COVID-19 cases, 12,179 discharges, and 120 deaths in the last 24 hours.

The total tally of COVID-19 cases has reached 1,10,63,491, total discharges so far are 1,07,50,680 and the death toll is 1,56,825. India currently has 1,55,986 active cases of coronavirus.

On Thursday, more than 200 cases have emerged from a single hostel in a school in the Washim district of the state. The students are mostly from Amravati and Yavatmal, two districts that have contributed to a spike in virus cases in recent weeks.

The BMC has also decided to close the iconic Oval Maidan in Mumbai from February 26. No activity will be allowed in the Maidan in south Mumbai, including sports till further orders.

Meanwhile, the West Bengal government also made it mandatory for passengers travelling in flights from four states — Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka, and Telangana — to produce negative Covid-19 reports.

The global COVID-19 death toll surpassed 2.5 million on Thursday, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.

The global death toll rose to 2,501,626, as of 12.24 p.m. local time, Xinhua reported citing CSSE, the US is the worst-hit nation, with 28,348,259 cases and 506,500 deaths, accounting for more than 25 percent of the global caseload and more than 20 percent of the global death toll.

Besides, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has warned of a third wave of COVID-19 cases if the country fumbles at its reopening from lockdown.

Moreover, France has announced to introduce a lockdown over the weekend in the northern coastal city of Dunkerque and the communes of Hauts-de-Flandre to halt the spike in COVID-19 infections.
